Selma’s two game winning streak came to a screeching halt Friday night against Bessemer City, which played like a team wanting to keep its playoff hopes alive.
The Tigers led by 41 at halftime and rolled to a 59-0 win over the Saints on homecoming.
“It just seemed like we couldn’t put it together tonight,” said Selma head coach Leroy Miles. “It was just one of those nights where things just wouldn’t go our way. We played a little bit better in the second but the first half was unbelievable. They jumped all over us.”
The Saints (4-4) had won back-to-back games over Keith and Brookwood and seemed like they might’ve turned their season around going into Friday. Instead, they ran into a Bessemer City team (5-2) in desperate need of a region win after consecutive losses to Hillcrest and McAdory.
“It was like we never could match their intensity,” Miles said. “It was like they were always a half step faster than us.”
Friday’s loss all but eliminated Selma from class 6A playoff contention.
The Saints have only one region win and have a bye next week before finishing their season by hosting region foe Northridge and county rival Ellwood Christian.
A win over Northridge would give Selma a chance of winning a tiebreaker for the fourth spot in class 6A, region 4, but the Saints would need several results to fall their way over the next three weeks.
