Fair gives back through canned food drive

Those who attended Kid’s Day at The Central Alabama Fair should give themselves a pat on the back because their efforts allowed the Lions Club to donate more than 1,000 cans Wednesday to the local food pantry, Christian Outreach Alliance.
Buddy Perkins, a volunteer at the Christian Outreach Alliance, said the pantry gives out around 250 bags of food each week with each bag having 8.5 pounds inside.
“The Lions Club doing this for us is just tremendous because this food we don’t have to buy,” Perkins said. “So, it’s just a huge benefit to us that the fair does this.”
Fair manager John Haskell wasn’t sure how many cans were donated last year, but he was confident more were donated this year than last year.
The fair gives the community a week of fun and is one of the most anticipated weeks in Selma of the year. We give organizers a lot of credit for once again finding a way to make an event with already so much positivity and fun an even bigger plus for this community with the canned food drive.
“It was a good success,” Haskell said. “The Lions Club itself is proud to be able to donate with the cans back to the community. We give just about all of the money back to the community through different organizations.”
The countdown is already on to next year’s fair, where organizers hope to once again be able to do the canned food drive. In the meantime, we’d like to thank them for another job well done.
