As with the Thanksgiving holidays, garbage and trash pickup schedules will be altered during Christmas and New Years.

Selma Public Works director Tommy Smith said the holidays always create some confusion, but the crew has put together a plan to relieve some of the confusion and buildup.

“The holidays are always tough because you can get behind, but we are going to be working New Year’s Eve to keep them from getting so far behind two weeks in a row,” he said.

Making the public aware of the changes, Smith said, will also help.

The public works department will be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 27, but will pick up Dec. 28.

During that week, Monday garbage and trash will be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday collections on Wednesday, Wednesday collections on Thursday and Thursday collections on Friday, though the office will be closed on that day.

The following week, Smith said the pattern will fall back into place.

“We’ll pick it back up Jan. 3 and everything will be back to our normal schedule,” he said.
