UAB coach to speak to QB club

UAB head football coach Bill Clark will speak Monday night at the Selma Quarterback Club at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center.
Clark is tasked with rebuilding the UAB football program, which will resume playing games in 2017 after being reinstated earlier this year.
“He’s had a very successful career in his own right, but he’s kind of in uncharted territory,” said Selma Quarterback Club captain Ray Hogg.
UAB originally announced the move to end its football program in 2014 — a decision that wasn’t popular with many students and alumni. The decision came at a strange time as UAB was coming off a 6-6 season in Clark’s first year.
The 6-6 mark was the best record the Blazers had posted since the 2004 season when they played in their only bowl game.
The school changed its course in June when school president Ray Watts announced the decision to reinstate the program. Watts said UAB had received additional support from private donors and businesses that made reinstatement possible.
“They decided to bring it back and I think it’ll be great to hear Coach Clark’s perspective on that,” Hogg said.
Clark coached at nearby Prattville High School from 1999-2007 and led the Lions to back-to-back Alabama High School Athletic Association state championships in 2006 and 2007. He served as the defensive coordinator at South Alabama from 2008-2010 before accepting the Jacksonville State head coaching position in 2013.
He led the Gamecocks to an 11-4 record in his first and only year at Jacksonville State.
Hogg said he’s hopeful a big crowd welcomes Clark to Selma Monday.
Guest tickets are available for $35 at the door.
