Mary Varner Dillard

Mary Varner Dillard, a long-time resident of Selma, died at the age of 73 in her home on Oct. 30, 2015.

Mary Varner is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Jerry Dean Dillard; son and daughter-in-law, Richardson Dean Dillard and Katie Clement Dillard; her grandson, Benjamin Dean Dillard; and her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret Virginia Engelhardt and Dr. Miller Bonner Engelhardt.

Mary Varner was born in 1942 in Tuscaloosa to Dr. Sam Varner McCall and Margaret Lavender McCall and was the youngest of their two children. She attended Mount Vernon College in Washington D.C. and later graduated from the University of Alabama where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Mary Varner and Jerry were married in Tuscaloosa on Aug. 22, 1970, and shortly thereafter moved to Selma to begin their life together. Mary Varner was an active parishioner at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and also dedicated her time to the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Selma. A visitation will commence at 10 a.m. and will be immediately followed by a burial service at 11 a.m. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mary Varner’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to one of the following: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the Dallas County-Selma Food Bank or the Miller Childers Food Pantry.
