Wednesday should be a day to remember for veterans in Selma and Dallas County.
Between the American Legion Post 20 and Concordia College Alabama, there will be three events to honor veterans for fighting for their country and sacrificing their lives for the red, white and blue.
The American Legion will host its regular Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. at Memorial Stadium.
Charles Friday, vice chancellor for Post 20, said the program is a great opportunity for the community to show support for the brave men and women that served in the military.
Friday, who is a veteran himself, said it’s also a time for veterans to reflect on their memories.
“These guys have so many memories, and it brings up memories about their comrades that they served with and friends that died while they were there and didn’t come back home,” Friday said. “They just remember all these things, and they talk about these things, and I think it is just a very special time for a lot of them.”
The program will feature the Selma High School Air Force Jr. ROTC and the Concordia College Alabama ROTC, and Major General Walter Givhan will be the guest speaker.
Concordia will also host its Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. during its weekly chapel service.
“We just think it is really important to honor the veterans who have served our country on Veterans Day,” said Abby Campbell with Concordia College Alabama. “We thought this was the perfect way to do that and just offer them a free lunch to show our appreciation.”
Campbell said the college will also take part in the Greenlight a Vet program by lighting up a building on campus and lighting up the stage during the program with green lights.
Concordia’s choir will sing patriotic songs and each veteran will be pinned on stage.
After the American Legion’s program, the National Commander for the American Legion, Dale Barnett, will take a tour of Selma to visit some of the city’s most historical sites.
The legion will also host a Walk for Veterans at 4 p.m. at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which will help raise money for veterans and their families that have been affected by disasters.
Registration, which starts at 2 p.m. at Songs of Selma Park, is $20 and includes a T-shirt. Friday said Aubie the Tiger, Auburn University’s mascot, will lead the walk over the bridge.
“We’d like to encourage everyone to come out and honor our veterans,” Friday said. “It should be a very special day.”
