Five area teams made the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s first high school basketball rankings of the year.

Keith is the only school in Dallas County to have both of its girls and boys teams listed in the initial rankings. The defending 1A state champion Keith girls (8-1) are ranked No. 1 following an eight game winning streak.

The Keith boys (8-1) are ranked No. 2 behind only Sacred Heart.

Keith is one of only three schools across the state to have both of its teams ranked in the top two of the rankings. Madison Academy, whose boys and girls are both ranked No. 1 in 3A, and Lee-Scott, who is ranked No. 2 in both polls in the Alabama Independent School Association, are the others.

Morgan Academy (3-2) is the only other boys’ team ranked from the Selma area. The Senators are No. 9 in the AISA poll following Tuedsay’s win over Lowndes Academy.

Southside (4-2) received consideration in 3A, but did not make the rankings after losing its last two games.

On the girls’ side, the Selma Saints (8-1) are No. 9 in 6A.
