Butterfly drop seemed to be huge success

On New Year’s Eve, dozens of locals gathered at the St. James Hotel to watch the Alabama-Michigan State football game, dance and to bring in the year 2016.
The evening ended when organizers dropped a butterfly to signify the start of a new year. The butterfly used Thursday evening was once one of many that sat all around Selma, representing the city’s title as butterfly capital of Alabama.
After the papier-mâché butterfly that was ordered for the event was smaller than expected, organizers quickly found a solution to ensure the evening’s main event went as planned.
Overall, the evening seemed to be a huge success.
Not only did it bring in the New Year, but it also brought people to the St. James Hotel, which is still currently in transition. The city of Selma and businessman Mark Peterson continue to negotiate the St. James’ potential sale.
No matter what happens, those in attendance Thursday seemed to be ready to support the hotel. Councilwoman Angela Benjamin said many people mentioned to her how much they support the St. James and hope to see it thrive in the future.
We’re hopeful Thursday started a new tradition in Selma with the butterfly drop.
Peterson expects the event to be bigger and better next year.
If everything goes as planned, we’ll all be watching the butterfly drop as we ring in 2017.
