Selma High School athletic director and football coach Leroy Miles has resigned to take a position with the Alabama Department of Education.

Miles said he gave notice of his new position Friday and will begin with the state department on March 1. At Selma High School he taught special education and he will continue in that field with the state department. In his new position, he will work in special education services.

“It’s always been my dream to pursue my career as an educator,” Miles said. “I’ve pursued my career as an athlete and a coach. What I want to do is concentrate on these last 10 to 15 years that I plan to spend in education and spend them pursuing my career as an educator.”

Miles has served Selma High School’s football coach for the last six seasons, posting a 31-31 record and leading the Saints to the playoffs in 2010 and 2013. During the last six years, 18 Selma High School football players have signed to play college football.

“The thing I’m most proud of is the lives we’ve been able to change with the opportunity to go college,” Miles said. “Not just the ones from football scholarships, but the ones that have got academic scholarships also.”

Miles was elected to the Dallas County School Board in 2014 and will continue to serve on the board. Miles said no decision has been made on who Selma’s new football coach and athletic director will be.

“I’m sure I will continue to come on Fridays and be a part of the community and support the football program and the new coach,” Miles said.
