After some schedule shuffling this week, the Dallas County Board of Education will not be meeting Tuesday to select its next superintendent.

Board President Carolyn Bates said the meeting will be rescheduled but a date has not been finalized.

“We got a lot of complaints from community members that were saying March 1 was a bad day because it is voting day,” Bates said. “Members of the community said they wanted to attend the meeting, and we had to consider some people were working the polls.”

Bates said adding to the crowded calendar is the fact Keith Middle/High School boys and girls basketball teams will be competing in Birmingham in the state 1A finals. Semifinals are Monday and the finals are Thursday.

Whenever the board meeting does take place, Bates said she expects the system will name its new superintendent then.

The final candidates include two already in the system. Hattie Shelton is Dallas County Schools Assistant Superintendent and Clarence Jackson is principal at Southside High School.

The other finalists are Dr. Vivian Relf, director of special education services for the Russell County Board of Education; Isaac Haynes, the former superintendent of the Canton, Mississippi Public School District; Walter Fenn, the assistant superintendent of Chilton County Schools; Sherene Carpenter, the coordinator of attendance at Birmingham City Schools; and Corey Jones, who works in administration for the Perry County School System.
