Concordia men, women advance to USCAA semifinals

Shaquille Duncan scored three buckets in a two-minute span to help Concordia take the lead and eventually hold off State University of New York Wednesday in the first round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division I men’s basketball tournament.
Neither team led by more than five the entire way, but it was Concordia that made the final run of the game.
The Hornets held on from there for a 70-66 win.
Duncan’s baskets put the Hornets ahead 63-59 with 4:18 to play. Guy Barnes kept the Concordia momentum going with a layup and the Hornets made four free throws in the final three minutes to keep its hopes of a national championship alive.
SUNY had a chance to tie with 18 seconds left, but Sam Annorh missed a 3-point shot from the corner.
Barnes made a final free throw to ice the game.
Duncan led the way for Concordia with 23 points and 13 rebounds on 11-for-25 shooting from the field. Barnes scored 13 points and had four rebounds and four assists. Jamie Washington, who was named a first team All-American, scored 12 points and had seven assists for the Hornets.
Concordia will play Washington Adventist at 10 p.m. ET Thursday in the semifinals.
Concordia 90, The Apprentice School 53 (Women)
The Concordia College Alabama women’s basketball team started the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national tournament Wednesday with an impressive showing.
Concordia tied a record for most rebounds in a game in a dominant, one-sided 90-53 win over The Apprentice School in the tournament’s quarterfinal round.
The Hornets had 69 rebounds, tying a record set by Berea in 2015.
Shuntavia Harris, who was named a first team All-American this week, led the way. She totaled 18 points and 22 rebounds for the Hornets.
Erica Ousley also had a big game, as she scored 20 points and went 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
The Hornets shot 40.7 percent from the field, while holding The Apprentice School to only 27.7 percent shooting.
The Hornets led 40-31 at halftime but outscored their opponents 50-22 in the second half to pull away.
Harris had a double-double in the second half alone, with 13 of her 18 points and 12 of her 22 rebounds coming in that part of the game.
Rayshell Harris was 5-for-10 from the field and scored 14 points.
Concordia will play Maine-Fort Kent at 11 a.m. ET Friday in a semifinal of the tournament, which is being held in Uniontown, Pennsylvania at Penn State Fayette.
