The Morgan Academy golf team is coming of age.
Over the last few years, the young Senators have taken their bumps and bruises, but on Monday all the hard work paid off. Morgan shot a combined score of 878 to win the Monroe Academy Golf Tournament at Vanity Fair Country Club.
Morgan Academy had the four lowest scoring players in the tournament. Jones Free shot the lowest score with a 77, Gus Colvin and David Cothran shot 79 and Thomas Morris shot 82.
The 878 score was the lowest team score for Morgan Academy in the last four years, and hea coach Ira Wagoner said it was the golf team’s first team victory in seven or eight years.
The other players for the Senators were Allen Todd (89), Harrison Adams (90), Will Alison (90), Haysten Levins (91), Jackson Pearce (99) and Arrington Mooney (102).
In its last three events, Morgan has finished third, second and now first.
“The cold weather is gone and they are getting to practice a little more, so it’s getting better,” Wagoner said.
Monday’s tournament was a six-team tournament, but also included individual players from around the state. Wagoner said the victory was big for his team’s confidence moving forward.
“They’ve got a great future ahead of them if they continue to improve at the rate they have,” Wagoner said.
Morgan will play in Fort Dale Academy’s tournament at Cambrian Ridge on Thursday.
