Law firms across the state of Alabama are playing a part in conquering hunger through a competition to see who can generate the most food and money for food banks.

The Alabama Legal Food Frenzy is an initiative from Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange and Alabama State Bar President Lee H. Copeland. The two have teamed up with the Alabama Food Bank Association to do something about hunger and how it affects Alabama citizens.

“Hunger is a silent predator that afflicts too many Alabamians. It has been estimated that as many as 20 percent of all Alabama families find themselves having to choose between paying bills and buying enough food to feed their children,” Strange said.

Strange said Alabama law firms are founded on the desire to make a difference and brighten the lives of families in need.

He encouraged practices to raise food and funds for the eight regional food banks within the state.

Selma Area Food Bank Executive Director Jeff Harrison said he believes the competition is a good idea and is beneficial to the community.

“Hopefully, the legal profession in Selma will take the challenge from the attorney general and do what they can to help. We need and appreciate any help we can gain,” Harrison said.

Harrison urges all members of the legal community in Alabama to help less fortunate neighbors by marking their calendars for the Alabama Legal Food Frenzy.

The contest will begin on April 25 and end on May 6.

Firms who deliver their food and monetary contributions to the local food bank will receive a 25 percent bonus of tabulated pounds. Food items will be weighed at the food bank and the results tabulated in pounds.

The Attorney’s General Cup will be awarded to the firm or legal organization that collects the most pounds per firm employee. Additional prizes will be given in ten other categories including:

*Legal Organization (Government, Corporate law departments): Per Capita

*Legal Organization (Government, Corporate law departments): Total Pounds

Online registration started on March 1 and seven teams have signed up since then.
