Jasmine Peeples’ Hornets lose in NCAA first round

AUSTIN, Texas — Selma native Jasmine Peeples’ run in the NCAA tournament lasted only one game. The No. 15 seed Alabama State Hornets were ousted by No. 2 seed Texas in the first round of the NCAA women’s tournament 86-42 Saturday in Austin, Texas.
The Selma High product led her team with two blocks in 26 minutes on the floor, and she went 1-of-2 from the free throw line.
The Hornets only trailed by five points at the end of the first quarter, but by halftime, the Longhorns led 32-22. Alabama State couldn’t keep up in the second half, as the Hornets were outscored 26-5 in the third quarter.
Alabama State earned a trip to the NCAA tournament after winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament. The Hornets finished the season 19-12.
