The city of Selma’s recreation department has a new baseball director.
Gerald Barron, who has umpired baseball games for more than two decades, has taken over the position from Jamie Tellier, who resigned earlier this month.
“It was a bad time to lose somebody right before the season started, but we worked it out, ” said interim recreation director Lebo Jones.
Barron is from Selma and has been umpiring and coaching in the city league for over 20 years, Jones said. Tellier served in his role for a calendar year and said he’s going to miss it. A position at his former place of employment opened and he said the offer was too good to pass up.
During his time as baseball director, Tellier helped organize several baseball and softball camps with the help of All In Sports Outreach, Inc., another organization he is a part of.
Opening day for the city’s youth baseball and softball league will be Friday, April 1 at the Sportsplex. Jones said each team will be introduced before their games.
