Rain cancels opening day of youth baseball, softball season

Opening day for baseball and softball season turned into just another rainy day.
The youth season was scheduled to start Friday night, but storms soaked the fields on Thursday night and Friday morning and forced the Selma Parks and Recreation to cancel opening ceremonies.
“We had a lot of rain last night and we are going to have some more rain today at two o’ clock and some more rain tonight,” said baseball director Gerald Barron. “We weren’t going to be able to have the fields ready for [Saturday] morning either.”
Barron said if the storms had ended Friday morning, there was a chance the city could’ve gotten the fields at the Dallas County Sportsplex into playable condition.
Storms in the afternoon ended that thinking and forced both days of games to be cancelled.
Barron said when he saw the conditions of the fields, he and interim recreation director Lebo Jones started calling coaches to let them know there’d be no games.
“We called each coach and we are hoping that the coaches got in touch with the parents,” Barron said. “That’s normally the procedure.”
With the cancellations, the first day of youth baseball and softball season will now be Monday. The games that were scheduled for Friday night are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, but no plans have been finalized.
Before each team’s first game, all of the players will be introduced to the crowd.
