A basketball game Saturday at Wallace Community College Selma will raise money for the Zeta Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

The game will raise money for Senior Culturama, a mentoring group of AKA, can go on a historically black college and university tour.

The Sneaks and Greeks Basketball Game will spotlight AKA’s national Think HBCU campaign. Danielle Wooten, coordinator of Senior Culturama, said she thinks the event will unify the community and give the girls in the mentoring group an opportunity to get insight on colleges.

“We’re trying to take the girls on a college tour to Nashville so they can visit Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University and Fisk University. I think the tour is much needed to expose them to universities that they can research and consider attending,” Wooten said.

She said the community, along with sorority and fraternity members of the National Panhellenic Council ,have been very supportive.

Basketball players from Keith High School, Dallas County High School, Southside High School, Selma High School and Ellwood Christian Academy will represent the sneaks of the event.

They will play against members of Greek organizations Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Senior Culturama takes a college tour annually. Last year the group toured Tuskegee University. Sneaks and Greeks Co-Chair Evelyn Evans said she wanted to make the fundraiser welcomes the community.

“Hopefully this event is something that expands over the years and some of the other organizations could partner with us,” Evans said.

She said Senior Culturama learns values from seeing AKA host events that are community-friendly.

“As they move forward in life, hopefully they will realize the importance of giving back and serving. I think when we have events like this it teaches them to lead by example,” Evans said.

Admission is $5 per person and tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance from AKA members.

The game will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday and take place in the gymnasium of Wallace, located at 3000 Earl Goodwin Parkway.
