The Special Olympics were held Wednesday at Memorial Stadium and more than 50 athletes competed in several different sports.
Those competing took part in a softball throw, shot put, distance kick, long jump and 100-meter dash, the 100-meter race/walk, 50-meter dash, 400-meter run, wheelchair race and other events. Athletes came from Selma, Camden, Marion and Montgomery to compete.
Many of the participants were from the Cahaba Center for Mental Health here in Selma.
Winners from Wednesday’s competition qualify for the state games in Troy University in May. The athletes who took part were just happy to show off what they can do.
The Special Olympics are always a special event, and it’s one we look forward to covering each year. We thank everyone who took part in Wednesday’s games and also everyone who attended to cheer on the athletes.
