The Alabama Independent School Association track and field championships were held at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday.
Sixteen teams from around the state travelled to Selma to take part in the event, which has been held in our city since the 1980s. There are so many experienced people who help out that the meet runs flawlessly, even when Mother Nature tries to dampen the event with rain.
The meet brings dozens, if not hundreds, of people to Selma each year. Although the meet isn’t as large as the Alabama High School Athletic Association state meet that has been held in Selma numerous times, it’s still an asset to our community.
Many of the parents and athletes stay here, eat here and get a chance to spend time in our historic city for a couple of days.
Each year, some of the top athletes from the AISA show their skills to Selma. We want to be among the first to congratulate the winners, who seem to break new records each and every year.
The state meet is one we look forward to each year. The countdown is already on for next year.
