The gloomy weather may have put a damper on some people’s plans, but not for the Selma-Dallas County Public Library’s Courtyard Café.

The café would usually take place outside, but instead Thursday’s event was moved to the back of the library.

Courtyard Café is a popular program hosted by the library two to three times a year. The event highlights a different aspect of Selma each time. On Thursday, the café showcased Sturdivant Hall Gift Shop.

“It’s the best kept secret in Selma,” said program director Jan Parker.

Along the back wall of the room, jewelry, art, accessories and clothes were set for display.

“They wanted to have a fashion show and they asked us to come and participate, and we were more than happy to do it,” said Sturdivant Hall board member Patti Currey.

Library director Becky Nichols said the event is a good way for people to learn about different things in Selma.

“Basically, a lot of people just don’t know what’s happening in Selma. This is a way, to not only know it but to see it, experience it and decide if its something that interests you,” Nichols said. “We believe Selma is sensational, but only if you get out in there and enjoy her.”

Nichols said the program is another way for people to enjoy the library.

It costs $8 to participate. Tickets must be purchased in advance because of limited seating.

A boxed lunch, desert and endless tea, water and coffee are included.

“It’s fun. A lot of these women enjoy coming and visiting,” Currey said.

Shortly after noon, boxed lunches were distributed and the fashion show began. Models showed the audience different ways to pair jewelry and accessories with outfits. Currey said the audience members were given a 20 percent off coupon to use at the shop.

Nichols said planning for the next Courtyard Café has already begun and it will be held some time during the fall. She said Parker is always looking for new things to feature.

“The library is only as good as the people who use it,” she said.
