Selma High School to fill three athletic positions

Selma High School’s athletic department will look completely different in the next few weeks, once the school names a head football coach, boys basketball coach and athletic director.
Dr. Angela Mangum, superintendent of Selma City Schools, said all three job postings have closed and interviews are underway. She said a recommendation is likely to be made by Selma High School principal Emma Theresa Alexander by April 29.
Mangum said the school board is expected to vote on Alexander’s recommendation on May 10.
Mangum said the superintendent is not heavily involved in the decision making process since this is a school based hire. She said Alexander will review the applications and a committee will score the top candidates during the interview process.
“I do know there were qualified applicants that were listed in Teach in Alabama for the position,” Mangum said, referring to the website where candidates had to apply.
Based on the number of applicants, there has been a lot of interest in all three positions.
Twenty candidates have applied for Selma’s vacant head football position, 18 have applied for the boys’ basketball coach position and 13 have applied to be the school’s next athletic director.
All three positions came open in the last few months.
First, football coach and athletic director Leroy Miles resigned in February to take a position with the state department of education. Miles served as Selma High School’s football coach for six years and as the school’s athletic director for one year.
Selma basketball coach Woodie Jackson resigned earlier this month.
With a career record of 733-364 and six state championships, Jackson remains one of the most winningest high school basketball coaches in state history.
Mangum said in March that Reginald Glover is leading the football team until a coach is hired and that Eugene Foster from R.B. Hudson Middle School has assumed the responsibilities of athletic director until a replacement is named for that position.
