Kayee McWherter and her mother Kay Swift have made fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation an annual affair for the past 10 years through various fundraisers. 

The two will be selling chicken salad plates and baked goods Thursday to raise money for the organization.

According to the www.cff.org, Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and progressively limits the ability to breathe.

McWherter and Swift have held a fundraiser in Selma for the past four years and said over the years they have received a lot of support.

“We have actually done pretty well. The first year was kind of a hit and miss, but we got more support than we assumed,” McWherter said.

She said the fundraiser has raised about $5,000 each year since they started it.

McWherter’s son Jay was born and diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Since, she has been on a campaign to spread awareness about the disease and help fund research for a cure.

“There is not a lot of information out about CF. It is a genetic disease that is most prevalent for Caucasians. There were no fundraisers in this area. So, we started doing them. We wanted to raise awareness here as well as collect donations for the medical research that the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation does,” McWherter said.

The bake sale will start at 8 a.m. People can purchase goods at the White Force Cottage, located at 811 Mabry St.

Choices include red velvet cake, carrot cake, caramel cake, lemon meringue pie, pecan pies and more. Depending on size, cake and pie pricing will ranges from $3- $30.

Chicken salad plates can be bought from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the same place. Customers will have the option to get their plates delivered with a minimum order of two plates or they can dine in at the cottage.

The plates will have chicken salad toped on a bed of lettuce, crackers, fruit and a dessert. They cost $8.50 and can be preordered.

Those who come by during the day can bid on a variety of items like TVs, baskets, jewelry, cookware and more at the silent auction at 5 p.m. People can also call (334) 412-8742 or (334) 419-1056 to get details on items.

Whoever bids the highest by the cut off time at 7 p.m. will take items home with them.

All funds that are raised will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

McWherter would like to raise between $5,000- $6,000.

There are other fundraisers that she does with her mother during the year and she said they have raised up to $19,000 in funds from all of them combined.
