Selmont residents have had enough

This weekend, we published an editorial calling on residents to once and for all say enough to those would commit crimes in our neighborhoods; say enough to those who use weapons to resolve arguments and say enough to those who would seek to divide our community.

And, it appears one such community has done just that.

Crediting tips and information from individuals and neighbors in the Selmont area, 19-year-old James Arthur Thomas has been arrested and charged for the Christmas Eve shooting death of Rueben Stitten.

In no way is the investigation complete, nor will Stitten’s family every again be complete after losing their loved one, but the arrest and ongoing investigation, we hope, should offer some comfort and opportunity to heal.

For the family members of far too many murder victims, the simple fact of knowing those responsible remain on the street is often overwhelming. They want closure. They want to know. They want to see the criminal face-to-face and, if given the opportunity, ask the question “why?”

One murder in our hometown, our neighborhood, is one too many, but Selma has had far more than it’s equal share. And, there is no arguing the full resources of our local and state law enforcement divisions have been thrown to finding these killers.

But, they cannot do it alone. We, the residents of Selma’s neighborhoods, bureaus and wards, must no longer remain silent when asked if you know anything.

As we said Sunday and we say it again now, enough is enough. And, for one Selmont neighborhood the shooting death of Rueben Stitten appears to have been the turning point.

The other families, our neighbors, deserve our help and our voices as well.
