The Dallas County softball team couldn’t get by Demopolis, but the Hornets beat Wilcox Central twice to advance to the Alabama High School Athletic Association super regional tournament in Troy on May 12 -14.

Dallas County beat Wilcox Central 15-0, lost to Demopolis 12-0 and 10-0 and then finished the day’s action with a 16-2 win over Wilcox Central Wednesday at Demopolis High School in the class 5A, area 6 tournament.

“They’ve got a really really good team, but we didn’t compete today like we needed to compete to have a chance playing with a team like Demopolis,” said Dallas County head coach Willie Moore.

Moore said he knew his team at least needed to beat Wilcox Central to advance past the area tournament, so he started his go-to pitcher Tori Hatfield in both those games.

Moore gave some of his other pitchers a chance during the Demopolis game because he said he will likely have to rely on more than just Hatfield to get the job done at the mound when the team plays in Troy.

 

Ellwood softball season ends at J.U. Blacksher

The Ellwood Christian Eagles lost to Georgiana 15-4 in the class 1A, area 4 tournament Wednesday at J.U. Blacksher. The loss ended Ellwood’s season, but head coach Calvin Marshall said Wednesday meant much more than a game.

Many of the Ellwood players, especially the seniors, were still mourning the loss of their classmate Denetria Pryor, who passed away from a sudden illness on April 26. The game was moved one day to allow the players to attend Pryor’s funeral on Tuesday.

Marshall said before the game began, the opposing team’s coach gave Ellwood a card signed by all the players.

In addition, the teams came together and prayed before the first pitch was thrown.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my seniors, especially dealing with what they had to deal with in the last couple days coming out and doing what they did today,” Marshall said.

Marshall said the team fell behind early to Georgiana and weren’t able to recover.
