Over the last few days, we have covered a lot of award programs. The week started with the Girl of the Year program on Tuesday and continued with both the Boy of the Year and Mayor George Evans’ Inspirational Achievers Awards Banquet on Thursday night. All the young people honored deserve a huge congratulations for the recognition. Harrison Adams and Mary Lauren Stewart join a long list of some of Selma’s best and brightest as Boy and Girl of the Year.

The 40 students honored by the mayor are also deserving of their awards and many have overcome challenges to succeed.

While the students certainly deserve the spotlight, their parents, family, teachers and others who helped them get to where they are deserve a pat on the back too. NFL player Michael Johnson told the Boy of the Year finalists to remember those who have helped them and go out and represent those people in all they do.

Finally, the YMCA of Selma-Dallas County, Delta Kappa Gamma and the mayor, his staff and sponsors should be thanked for their hard work to put the programs on.
