Veteran sports writer Buster Wolfe joins The Selma Times-Journal staff today as its sports editor.

Wolfe, a Greenville, Miss. native, comes from The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal in Tupelo, where he was outdoors editor.

Wolfe, 55, has 35 years experience in covering and editing sporting events in Mississippi and Louisiana. He has won numerous awards for photography, column writing and outdoor reporting in both states.

“I’m excited to be working in Selma with such a rich sporting history,” Wolfe said, “and its love of outdoors and SEC football.”

A graduate of the University of Mississippi, Wolfe is an avid outdoorsman, whose passions includes fly-fishing, fly tying, duck hunting and deer hunting. Wolfe also led the effort at the Tupelo paper in bringing sports video and blogging to that newspaper’s Web site.

“We’re fortunate to have someone of Buster’s caliber join our staff here at the Times-Journal,” said Executive Editor Leesha Faulkner. “He comes equipped with the knowledge and the ability to hit the ground running.”

Former sports editor Barrett Welch will become copy editor and features reporter, focusing mainly on religion and life and styles features.

“The Selma Times-Journal has recognized Barrett’s gifts as a copy editor and his talent for writing feature stories,” Faulkner said. “This way the newspaper and online product can benefit from his best efforts.”
