If Thursday’s spring game against Holt was any indication, Keith running back Domonique Jones is in for a monster senior year.

Jones, a rising senior, ran for a 70-yard touchdown and around 150 yards as Keith defeated Holt 34-0 Thursday night in a spring jamboree at Holt.

“He was his usual self,” said Keith coach Harry Crum.

Last year, Jones ran for 1,711 yards and was named second-team all-state by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. He’s one of the established playmakers for the Bears going into this season, so he played sparingly Thursday night.

Crum said he wanted to get a look at some of the other newcomers on the Bears’ offense. since Keith is replacing starters in quarterback Brian Crum and three offensive lineman.

Eighth grader Jared Edwards, who will be a freshman next year, took all but one snap at quarterback during Thursday’s spring game. He only left the field when his helmet came off during a play and by rule had to miss the next snap.

“He’s got a lot of heart and he loves the game of football,” Crum said.

Edwards was so impressive that Crum said he’d be the starting quarterback if the regular season started today. He’d be the first freshman to start at quarterback during Crum’s 15 years at the school.

The Bears struck early on Jones’ 70 yard run and kept the momentum going from there. Martavis Hatcher scored on a 10-yard jet sweep and on a pass from Edwards. Trayshaud Jackson also scored on a 10-yard sweep and had around 50 yards rushing in the game.

Thursday’s win was the end of spring training for the Bears, but Crum said the team plans to hold workouts three nights a week during the summer.

“We want to keep a balance,” Crum said. “We want to get them up here to work out and also want them have some time to enjoy themselves because it’s summer.”

 

Dallas County 13, West Blocton 7

Touchdowns by Calvin Starks and Anthony Reuben led Dallas County past West Blocton 13-7 last week.

Starks scored on a 58 yard run and Reuben added a 6-yard touchdown as the Hornets held on for the win.

Each team’s varsity played three quarters in the game. Dallas County had a fumble inside the West Blocton 3-yard line and had another touchdown called back by a penalty.

The Tigers’ lone score came on a 65-yard fumble return.
