Selma University had plans to play in the National Christian College Athletic Association baseball World Series, which begins Wednesday, but an early exit in the regional tournament ended the Bulldogs’ season prematurely.

The Selma University Bulldogs lost two games in the 2016 NCCAA Baseball South Regional Tournament at Emmanuel College to close out the season on May 11. The Bulldogs lost an opening round game to Toccoa Falls 13-3 and then fell to Emmanuel 17-6 in the loser’s bracket game.

Selma head coach Adrian Holloway said he believed his team was much better than how it performed in the regional tournament.

“It seemed like everything went against us,” Holloway said.

Holloway also said the loss kept Selma from winning a national championship among the Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He said he believed West Virginia State would take the title since that team was able to advance further than Selma.

“They’re probably going to be crowned the national champions, and we’re going to be sitting in second or third,” Holloway said. “It just ruined our whole year with a poor tournament performance.”

Although it was a tough end to the season, Holloway feels good about the team’s upcoming season.

“We’re reloading for next year,” Holloway said. “Everybody’s coming back, and we’ve added some JUCO transfers, a couple pitchers and we’ve got three more guys from Puerto Rico, so we’ll be back at it next year.”
