Familiar names found themselves near the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the 88th Annual Selma Country Club’s Men’s Invitational.
Andy Stewart shot a first round 70 and Paul Garner, who has dominated the Club Championship at the country club in recent years, was only one more shot back after firing an opening round 71.
However, both players were chasing Will Morrison.
Morrison shot a first round 68 for a two-shot lead over Stewart and a three shot lead over Garner, Chaylor Chance, Jason Regan and Tim Fitzgerald. Beau Boyd, Richard Douglas and Tripp Owens were another shot back.
Don Blanton led a group five shots back that also included Drew Bass, Harris Stevens, McGowin Miller, Philip Nader and Robbie C. Cotton.
Taylor McCollum and William Free shot 74 and are six back and Denson Henry and Wiggins Edrington were the last pairing to qualify for the championship flight after a pair of 75s.
After the opening round, players were separated into five flights based on their scores. There are 56 players in this week’s field and 19 qualified for championship flight.
The players in the championship flight are separated by just seven shots going into Saturday’s second round, which will start at 10 a.m. The final round will be played Sunday.
