Those in the market for locally grown fruits and vegetables won’t have to venture far as the Selma Farmers Market will open for the season Saturday morning.

Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sheryl Smedley said the farmers market is a win-win for farmers and consumers.

“We always encourage people to shop local, and this is another opportunity where people can buy fresh foods right here in the community,” Smedley said. “It’s good for everybody.”

Starting Saturday, the market will be open at the Block Park pavilion from 6 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday through the fall.

Shoppers are encouraged to come earlier to see what the approximately 15 vendors have to offer. Two of those vendors this year will be Bob and Carla Schuerman, owners of Petal Pushers Farm in Valley Grande.

The couple has been selling fresh produce, including blueberries and blackberries, at the farmers market for the past four or five years.

“We get to interact with the people of Selma and provide Selma with some fresh, homegrown produce,” Carla said.

The Schuermans also sell vegetables, herbs and homemade bread. Carla said she has some new bread recipes for people to enjoy this year.

“June and July will be good, productive months. People are going to come out and buy,” Carla said.

During Saturday’s kick off, there will be an extra plant sale organized by the Alabama Master Gardeners and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Assorted potted plants, vegetables, trees, flowers and other garden items and tools will be available.
