A forum this Saturday will focus on free financial advice and voting empowerment.
The forum, which is supported by the Selma Links Chapter, will be held at The School of Discovery from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and is open to teenagers and adults.
Cicely Curtis is helping to organize the forum and said she believes it will help people better manage their finances.
“We want to help avoid financial pitfalls some of us have made in the past,” Curtis said. “We just want people in the community to be financially empowered and fully informed.”
Topics covered will include credit, investments, home buying, debt and voter registration.
Curtis said she hopes younger people, especially college students will come out to learn about money.
Breakout sessions will give attendants one-on-one time to ask questions.
Candidates for mayor of Selma have also been invited to speak about their platforms. People who are not registered to vote will be able to complete those forms too.
“We know in the past, we have had low voter turnouts. Mainly, the misconception is people feel their vote doesn’t matter or count but we want our citizens to be fully informed and understand the power of their vote,” Curtis said.
