Eaton says Selma Kickball league off and running

Selma’s “It’s Just Kickball” league appears to be off to a good start in year two.
The league held its first games Sunday, June 5 and hosted another set of games this past weekend at the Selma High School softball field. The league has been organized in part by Venecia Eaton, who serves as the city’s youth and senior coordinator.
“From the first Sunday to this Sunday we had the same faces and they are bringing more people with them,” Eaton said.
Last year the league was announced, but never actually came together. Eaton said that might’ve been due to lack of organization.
This year Eaton estimated that more than 100 people — children and adults — took part the first weekend and another 80 or so took part this past weekend.
Although it’s off to a good start, there are still several things to be worked out.
The first couple of weeks have just been for fun, but Eaton is hoping to create a regular season schedule that will run through September.
Adults were able to form their own teams to play in the kickball league, and Eaton said children aren’t locked into teams. She said whichever children show up from week to week are usually put on the field with the adult teams playing that day.
“We’re allowing the youth to switch teams after each game,” Eaton said. “They are the only ones that aren’t on a set team.”
Games start between 3-5 p.m. on Sunday afternoons at the Selma High School softball field. Eaton said the start time usually depends on the heat and whether or not they are grilling food that day.
