Residents will have plenty to do this upcoming Fourth of July weekend.
The city of Selma is bringing back its July 4 fireworks show, after several years without one during the holiday weekend. The Selma show has traditionally been held in downtown, where fireworks would be visible above the Edmund Pettus Bridge, but this year will move to Memorial Stadium.
“Ideally, it will be better down there (at Memorial Stadium) for the type of show we are getting,” said Mayor George Evans. “I think it would be a good turnout.”
The fireworks and laser show will start Monday at Memorial Stadium beginning at 8:15 p.m.
Valley Grande’s fireworks show will begin Monday at Valley Grande City Park at 9 p.m.
Leading up into the show, the park will also have various games and a rock climbing wall for residents to enjoy.
The White Linen Affair will kick the weekend off Friday, July 1 at 7:30 p.m. and will run until 11 p.m. at ArtsRevive, which is located at 3 Church Street.
In its second year, The White Linen party — an activity as a part of the One Hot Summer Series — will include food, dancing, music and drinks.
Admission is free, but guests must wear white to enter.
“Just come out and enjoy yourself at ArtsRevive,” said Mayor George Evans during Monday night’s council meeting. “We did it last year for the first time at the St. James Hotel, but the hotel is booked up completely.”
Evans said the funds for the Fireworks and Laser Show are coming from tourism and planning and development special projects.
