The Selma Children’s Choir and Orchestra announced its first Choir Director, Dr. Camilla Horne, on Tuesday.  

Horne is Professor of Music at Judson College in Marion and the head of the Music Department.

She has taught music in 18 schools, private and public, in nine states around the country.

As both a teacher and life-long learner, Dr. Horne has committed her life to vocal and instrumental music education for all. At the age of 2, her father handed her a microphone in church where he was serving as a Lutheran Pastor, and encouraged her to sing her first solo, “Beautiful Savior.”

She began taking piano lessons at the age of 5 and when her feet could reach the pedals she began playing the organ.

Horne understands first-hand how music participation at an early age can significantly impact one’s intellectual, emotional, behavioral, and spiritual health.

She also believes in the power of music to help people move beyond racial and cultural barriers.

Horne agrees with a recent study that found that “singers not only harmonize their voices but also synchronize their heart beats” and therefore, providing unity amongst diversity.

With an extensive background in children’s choirs and instrumental ensembles, Dr. Horne is looking to recruit local children entering second or third grade who are interested and committed to participating.

The Selma Children’s Choir and Orchestra invites the community to meet Horne at a meet and greet at the Larry Striplin Performing Arts Center, located at 1000 Selma Ave., followed by a recital and musical demonstration in the Walton Theater on Tuesday, August 2 from 5–7 p.m. Information concerning audition times, tuition costs and other important information will be available at the meet and greet.
