Meadowview Christian football player Mason Kendrick and Keith cheerleader A’janae Moseley will be featured on the cover of the upcoming edition of Gridiron, the Times-Journal’s high school football preview magazine.
Kendrick and Moseley received more than 1,300 votes, which edged Morgan Academy’s John Tyler Fisher and Aireal Brown by about 200 votes. Moseley’s win meant that a Keith cheerleader will be on the Gridiron cover for the third consecutive year.
“Every time we went on Facebook to see how many votes we had, we just called each other and got people to keep tagging,” Moseley said. “It was hard but we kept it going.”
Kendrick keeps another streak alive. Over the last four years, four different schools have had a football player represent them on the magazine’s cover.
Kendrick’s sister, Claudia, was featured on the front of the 2014 Hoopla Magazine Cover.
“My mom is pretty pumped because [my sister] got it for the Hoopla. I think it was her senior year,” Kendrick said. “She was pretty pumped that I got it also.”
Kendrick said he appreciates the opportunity to represent Meadowview on the cover.
“It means a lot to represent not just my school but Selma football,” Kendrick said.
In third place was Dallas County football player Paul Daniels and Meadowview Christian’s Hannah Phillips with 869 votes; Ellwood Christian’s Larry McGary and Southside’s Amari Drane was fourth with 807 votes; Southside’s DeQuan Johnson and Anna and Morgan Academy’s Anna Catherine King had 729 votes; Keith’s Domonique Jones and Dallas County’s Nia Brooks finished sixth with 587 votes and Selma’s DeVaughan Blackmon and Ellwood Christian’s Gabby Crum finished seventh with 549 votes.
The contest took place on the Times-Journal’s Facebook page. It started on Monday morning at 8 a.m. and finished Friday at 5 p.m.
Gridiron will be published Friday, Aug. 26.
