The Morgan Academy rushing attack appeared to be in regular season form Friday night against Southern Academy.

Sam Brackin scored on rushes of 36 and 15 yards to lead the Senators to a 34-14 win in a game that was only three quarters long. Each team’s junior varsity played the fourth quarter.

“I think we’ve got a long way to go as a football team,” said Morgan Academy head coach Josh Thacker. “We saw some glimpses of good stuff; we saw some bad stuff. I did see our guys get after it a little bit, and I was proud of that.”

Southern struck first after running 64 yards on the first play of the game, but Morgan answered quickly. On Morgan’s first possession, Senators’ quarterback Peyton Egbert connected with Brayton Brown for a 21-yard touchdown.

From that point on, Morgan focused on its running game.

Following a Southern punt, Morgan started its second drive at its own 47-yard line. A 15-yard run by Sam Brackin and a 17-yard rush by Gunnar Henderson moved the Senators’ offense into the red zone.

Henderson capped the drive by diving for the pylon on a 21-yard rushing touchdown to put Morgan up 14-7.

Brackin scored the next two touchdowns for Morgan. He ran around right end for both, giving the Senators a 27-14 advantage going into the final quarter. The final score of the game came on a 3-yard rushing touchdown by John Tyler Fisher.

On Friday, Morgan fans got their first look at the Senators’ team for 2016, including first year head coach Josh Thacker’s offense. Thacker said Friday the running attack looked pretty good, but he also knows it has to for the Senators to have success on offense.

“It’s feast or famine on that. If it doesn’t go, we don’t go,” Thacker said. “I thought we executed, and that’s the main thing I wanted to see  was our guys execute our scheme. I thought we accomplished some of that. I’m not going to say it was perfect, but it was pretty good tonight.”

Morgan Academy opens its regular season against Edgewood Academy next week in Montgomery.
