Changes coming to raft race

The Alabama River Raft Race is officially back for another trip down the Alabama River, though there will be some changes this year.
The state of Alabama’s Marine Police Division has granted the needed permits for the revived event, which will take place on Labor Day.
The event was brought back last year with good participation. However, there will be some notable changes.
The biggest one being that homemade rafts will not be allowed.
Organizer Clay Carmichael said due to safety concerns by the ALEA Marine Police, the race will be limited to manufactured boats.
“We are working with the state to get the homemade raft category approved for 2017, which may involve registering your vessel with the state,” said Carmichael. “We apologize to any teams who may have started construction.”
Carmichael said manufactured canoes, kayaks and river tubes will be allowed.
The race will kick off at 9 a.m. Entry fees are $10 or $15 for a T-shirt.
An after party will take place at The Sand Bar with live music from John Bull, Bubba Hall, and Mike Kiser. Awards will be presented to the winners.
There will be meetings for participants on Thursday, Aug. 25 and Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. at the Sand Bar to go over the rules and answer any questions.
