Paul Garner continued his dominant run in the Selma Country Club Championship Sunday, but Don Blanton made him have to work for it.
Garner was up three shots with three holes to play during Sunday’s final round, but bogeyed 16 and 17 and found himself a shot behind Blanton heading to 18. Garner made par at 18 to get into a playoff and then made a par on the first and only playoff hole to edge Blanton by a shot.
Garner estimated it’s the ninth time he’s won in the last 11 years.
“With three holes to play I’m three ahead and with one hole to play I’m one behind. Quite a turn of events,” Garner said.
Blanton birdie 16 and 17, while Garner made bogey on both. Garner managed to par 18, finishing with a final round 70, while Blanton made bogey to shoot 71.
Blanton and Garner, who played both rounds together, went to the first hole to start the playoff. Blanton made a bogey after being near the green, while Garner managed a par to win the tournament.
“Donny uncharacteristically hit a bad chip shot,” Garner said.
Garner said during the final holes, it started to feel like match play.
“You’re keeping up with what you do but you’re also keeping up with what they do on every shot,” Garner said.
“Every shot means something. There are no shots you can take off.”
Blanton, who bested his age by one with a first round 68, led by two entering the final round. Like Garner, he’s been the club champion many times before too.
Blanton estimated after Saturday’s round that he’s won it 10 to 12 times.
Third place was Philip Nader, who finished with a two day total of 143.
Troy Harvill was another two shots back at 145 and Logan Tucker finished fifth overall with a 146.
Tucker and teammate Tyler Adkins shot a 123 to win the team competition, which was determined by net score.
The tournament’s net score individual winner was Brennan Nedley, who finished with a 136 total. Nedley edged Danny Peavy by one, Tucker and Barry Stephens by two and Blanton by three.
