Winterboro doubles up Keith in opener

After Keith tied Winterboro 8-8 Friday night, the visiting Bulldogs would score on the very next play from scrimmage and not look back en route to a 28-14 win.
Winterboro scored on its first drive with a run from Clay Twyon to go up 8-0 within the first two minutes of the game.
The teams would then trade possessions before Keith scored off a 6-yard run from freshman quarterback Jared Edwards with 5:56 to go before halftime.
However, the Bulldogs would steal back the momentum on the next play from scrimmage, when Twyon tight roped the sideline for a score from midfield.
“Somebody just assumed he was so close to the sideline that someone else would make the tackle. I thought he was done and then boom. That kind of took away the momentum,” said Keith head coach Harry Crum.
A persistent rain started at the beginning of the third quarter and made a penalty-plaqued game worse.
“We had awful problems with the center snap. We lost our center earlier in the week and had to make a center. Our timing, the first half, we just looked deplorable,” Crum said.
Winterboro scored the quarter’s only points with a 6-yard run from Marcus McMeans to go up 22-8. They would add another score in the fourth.
Keith capped scoring for the night with three minutes remaining off a 30-yard pass from Mark Young Jr. to Marquez Hatcher.
Highlights for the Keith defense include an interception for Marquez Hatcher in the second half and stopping the Bulldogs twice within the red zone.
“I did see some good things. I saw some good catches,” Crum said. “We just never could get it together to turn the corner.”
Keith (0-1) travels to Calhoun next week.
