Brayton Brown returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, but little else went right for Morgan Academy Friday night.
One week after ending Edgewood Academy’s 71 game winning streak, tenth-ranked Morgan (1-1) crashed back down to earth against No. 7 Marengo Academy. The Longhorns scored the game’s first three touchdowns and upended the Senators 42-6 Friday.
“We knew Marengo is a very tough football team. They are a physical football team. That’s kind of what they pride themselves on,” said Morgan Academy coach Josh Thacker. “We tried to do some things to take away things they were good at. The night just didn’t work out for us.”
Thacker said the Senators had a lot of three-and-outs and weren’t able to move the football.
Marengo Academy (1-0) got on the board first after taking a Morgan Academy (1-1) turnover down the field for a touchdown capped by a 2-yard plunge by Weldon Aydelott. Hayden Megginson would add an extra point to give the Longhorns a 7-0 lead with 2:57 remaining in the first quarter.
Marengo took advantage of a fumble recovery by Daniel McCray with 2:21 in the first quarter. Quarterback Jacob Beck capped that ensuing drive and Megginson’s kick pushed the lead to a 14-0 lead.
Gavin Tate scored the next touchdown by breaking several tackles on the way to a 47-yard run to push the lead to 21-0.
Brown returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, but the PAT was blocked.
In the second half, Aydelott would add two more scores one from 5-yards out and the other from 2-yards out to push the lead to 35-6. Megginson capped the scoring with a touchdown run to give the Longhorns the 42-6 final score.
Morgan Academy will host Tuscaloosa Academy next week.
