After losing several key contributors from teams that went deep into the playoffs, the 2016 Meadowview Christian volleyball team is a work in progress.

Head coach Tim Burton played 10 different players on Tuesday when the Trojans hosted Marion Academy. Burton said he’s started a different lineup in each of Meadowview’s regular season games and will continue to mix things up until he finds the right lineup for the rest of the year.

All the mixing didn’t seem to have an effect on Meadowview. After a rocky start, the Trojans easily defeated Marion in straight sets 25-15, 25-14, 25-4.

“We gave them almost as many points as we made [in the first set], but they came around in the second and third game and started serving a lot better,” Burton said.

The first set was close early, but the Trojans took the lead on three consecutive aces by Sara Tapper. Mallory Freine, one of three seniors on the team and the Trojans’ most experienced player, had a kill and an ace in the middle of the set to put Meadowview up 17-12.

Tapper had four more aces in a row to help Meadowview finish off the first set.

In the second set, Freine took over with her serving. The Trojans were up only 16-12 when she stepped up to serve, but she had seven consecutive points to put the set away.

Freine, who has played as the team’s setter in previous years, is going to play as more of a hitter in this year’s attack, Burton said.

“Even as little as she is, she’s got air time,” Burton said. “It took me forever last year to get her to realize that she can hit.”

The third set was completely one-sided. The Trojans jumped out to a 10-1 lead after a kill by Alyssa Verhoff. Then, Tapper took over again. She served 12 straight aces at one point.

Freine added a kill to made the score 24-2 and then the Trojans needed three more plays before putting the match away.

Meadowview plays a junior varsity contest Thursday at Lighthouse Christian. The varsity plays again Monday at Victory Baptist-Millbrook. Burton said in that match, he’ll still be looking for the right pieces to lead the Trojans forward.

“I’ve got a couple of JV that I’m pulling up, tall girls that can get up at the net,” Burton said. “That’s something I’m missing.”
