Following a match last week where Morgan Academy lost in three close sets, Senators head coach Kayla Mason said her team needed to learn how to finish.

On Thursday against Hooper Academy, Mason saw her team take a big step forward.

The Senators rallied from a 24-18 deficit in the first set and then went on to win close second and third sets to sweep the Colts.

“That is how you win ballgames,” Mason said. “That is how you step up and do what it takes to win, no matter what you have to do. That’s what I’ve been trying to get them to see all season, was from going from being mediocre to being a winner.”

Morgan (6-5) won the match 27-25, 25-21, 25-20 to get back to over .500 on the season and to move to 2-1 in area play.

During the first set, Hooper controlled the action most of the way.

Led by Cassidy Lawrence and McKenzie Williams, the Senators fought off six consecutive match points to tie the game. Williams had two of her 19 kills and Lawrence had four aces during the Senators 7-0 run.

Hooper tied it at 25-25 when Williams’ return went into the net, but the Senators won the next two points. Hooper served long to put Morgan up one and then the Colts hit the ball into the net.

The Senators led the second set most of the way. The Senators won the longest rally of the match — one where both sides possessed the ball four times — to pull within 6-5. The Senators won 10 of the next 16 points to take control.

Winning serves by Kenzie Horton kept Morgan in front 19-15 and a kill by Regan Hewitt made it 20-15.

Lawrence had four of the last five points for the Senators, including a big hit at the net that put the second set away.

Down 2-0, Hooper didn’t go away.

The Colts tied the third set at 22-22 on a kill by Kelli Moseley, but the Senators won six of the final seven points. Hannah Free and Williams had kills to put the set away.

Lawrence had 20 assists and Hewitt also had five assists.

The Senators junior varsity (8-3) also won Thursday. Maggie Colley won 17 straight points on serves for Morgan in a 25-25, 25-7 win.
