The Selma Recreation Department’s Youth Football League will hold opening day Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
The ceremony will start at 8 a.m. and games will begin at 9 a.m. The last game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. There are 19 teams in this year’s league and all but one will open its season on Saturday.
“We are going to introduce all the teams and all the coaches,” said Terry Jackson, who serves as the city’s football director. “Then we will have them line up on the field like we always do. We will play the national anthem and then start playing.”
Jackson said there are about 400 players taking part in the league this year, which is down from last season.
He said the lower turnout is because there is no team from Orrville this year. Jackson said the Orrville teams couldn’t afford the equipment they needed.
Jackson said the first day of a new season is always exciting.
“The kids are tired of practicing and now they are ready to play,” Jackson said.
