In its fourth year, the Get Fit Selma! Health and Fitness Festival is hoping to get people on their feet and moving.
The festival is presented by Taylor Internal Medicine, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and McRae-Gaines Learning Center. The festival will start at 8 a.m. at Wallace Community College Selma and will include a 5K run, a 1-mile fun run/walk, free health screenings, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a exercise and fitness expo and a mini soccer clinic.
“The whole idea was to continue [Bruce Taylor’s] dedication to make sure people got annual health screenings, in particular because of the problems with type II diabetes, obesity and hypertension,” said Stephanie Hamm, chairwoman of the festival.
Registration for the 5K begins at 6:30 a.m. at Wallace and ends at 7:30 p.m. The race will start on Donitha Griffin Drive in front of the Wallace gymnasium. It goes down Earl Goodwin Parkway to the first Selma Mall entrance, circles the light pole and proceeds back to Earl Goodwin Park, through subdivisions on the east side of Earl Goodwin Parkway. The finish line will be at Wallace.
The award will be $100 for first overall and $50 for the first person 50 or older and then by age groups in five-year increments starting with age 14 and under through 70. An extra $50 will be awarded as a bonus for anyone that breaks the men or women’s records.
The 1-mile fun run/walk will start at 8:30 a.m. and will be a tour of the Wallace campus.
Early registration ends at midnight, Thursday, Sept. 15. Mail in registrations can be sent to Mrs. Angie McCary, McRae-Gaines Learning Center, PO Drawer 1266, Selma, AL 36702, but must be postmarked by Sept. 13.
The early registration cost for the 5K run is $10 for youth and students up through 21 years old and $15 for anyone 22 and older. The cost is $20 for adults on race day and still $10 for youth.
The early registration cost for the 1-mile fun run/walk is $7 for everyone. On race day, it is $10 for adults to take part in the fun run.
Winston Williams is running the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, which will be held at R.B. Hudson Middle School.
The first games will start at 9 a.m. and will continue throughout the day.
Williams said about 25 teams were registered as of Monday.
The age groups are 9-13, 14-16 and 17 and over.
“People are excited about it,” Williams said.
