Living high on hog at Fall Farm to Feast

Those who attend this year’s Fall Farm to Feast will be living high on the hog, literally.

This year’s Blackbelt Benefit Group and Grow Selma fundraiser at Spencer Farm, set for Sept. 24, will focus on pig roasting.

Missouri farmer Carl Blake will visit and teach a class on pig roasting using what’s called an American Hot Box. The class will start at 8 a.m., and the $30 ticket includes breakfast and lunch.

Blackbelt Benefit Group member Clay Carmichael said Blake has a unique background as a computer engineer turned farmer.

“He was an Apple engineer and decided he wanted to start doing farming. He has an interesting take on life,” Carmichael said.

After an afternoon break, a Iowa Swabian Hall pig that Blake roasts on site will be served alongside side dishes from the Grow Selma community garden and other local farmers.

Blake has used genetics to breed a pig as close to Swabian Hall swine as possible. The breed — considered not too fat and not too lean — was renowned as some of the best pork in Europe.

“He found out how they bred it then and brought it back to life,” Carmichael said.

After dinner, musicians will play around a bonfire, including Veigh Kay Spencer, a student at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Spencer is the daughter of Chip and Laura Spencer with Spencer Farm in Marion Junction.

Tickets for the 6 p.m. dinner and music are $75. The combined total for the morning class and evening dinner is $105.

Carmichael said the easiest way to purchase tickets is to go online to brownpapertickets.com and search “Fall Farm to Feast.”

About 100 of 125 tickets had already been sold as of Monday afternoon.
