Several local schools may get the chance to play in a new venue during the high school basketball playoffs this season.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association announced Thursday that the Central Regional Basketball Tournament is moving from Alabama State University’s Dunn-Oliver Academy to Montgomery’s Garrett Coliseum.

Alabama State hosted the tournament from 2007-2015, but opted out of the remainder of its contract. The 2017 tournament is scheduled for Feb. 16-22 and will feature 28 boys and 28 girls teams, who must all qualify by getting through area tournaments and sub-regional play.

Keith, Southside, Selma, Dallas County and Ellwood Christian would all play at Garrett Coliseum if they were able to advance that far.

Keith, Selma and Dallas County have all won games at Alabama State over the last nine years.

Dallas County won two games there in 2014 on its way to a state championship.

Keith’s girls’ basketball team won three Central Regional titles at Alabama State on their way to appearances in Birmingham, including winning a state championship in 2015.

Keith’s boys team made numerous appearances in the Central Regional at ASU and won it in 2016 to get to Birmingham.

“As long as our school gets a chance to play in it, I really don’t care where they play it at,” said Keith athletic director Tommy Tisdale. “We’d just be grateful to play in whatever venue they open up if we can qualify to get there.”

The AHSAA’s contract with Garrett Coliseum is through 2019.

“We thank Alabama State University for serving as a site for this tournament,” said AHSAA executive director Steve Savarese.

“We are also very excited about the Central Regional at Garrett Coliseum. This arena has so much history. We have an outstanding relationship with the City of Montgomery. They already host many AHSAA events including the state baseball and softball championships, super sectional wrestling and super regional volleyball championships. We truly believe playing at Garrett Coliseum will be a memorable experience for our member schools and team participants.”
