Support groups helps those dealing with dementia

Dear Editor,

My wife died on August 10, 2016, at the age of 73 after a three and a half year journey/struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.  I feel compelled to write to encourage anyone who has a family member dealing with this cruel disease to attend the monthly meetings of the Dementia Support Group headed by Mrs. Norma McCrory.  These meetings are held at 5 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Selma and Dallas County Public Library.

One thing I learned is just because a person has Alzheimer’s does not mean that all cases are the same.  Some types progress faster than others and the situations can vary greatly.  The support offered at these meetings by people who have dealt with the effects of this disease with a family member is great.  Many of those who attend do so even after their family member has died from complications from Alzheimer’s.

Please consider attending these meetings if you have a family member showing signs of dementia.
