Wallace Community College Selma is doing its part to raise awareness for breast cancer during the month of October.
The college is hosting a Walk and Run Against Breast Cancer on Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the school. The run will be a 5K run and a 1-mile walk will also be held.
“We always try to give back,” said Christy Purdie, who is helping plan the event. “Wallace Community College is an open campus and we serve our community. Whether it’s through aviation day or just anything that we can do as far as community wise, we always try to do things that will give back.”
Proceeds from the run will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Pre-registration will start at 7:20 a.m. and the race will begin at 8 a.m. in front of Wallace’s gymnasium.
Kids and jogging strollers are welcome, but dogs and bikes are prohibited from the race. Color will be tossed out during the race, but it is made of cornstarch powder and will be scooped out of a large bucket and tossed.
The color will wash out after the event. Organizers recommend bringing a towel and any additional items that they wouldn’t mind getting color on. Participants are asked to wear white T-shirts.
The Wallace Color Run is the same day as Integrity Worldwide’s Run For Kenya, which will take place in downtown Selma. Purdie said the school didn’t realize Integrity’s event was the same day when it was scheduled.
After Wallace’s race, a balloon releasing ceremony will be held at the “Fountain of Hope” behind the Hank Sanders Technology Center for survivors and victims of Breast Cancer Awareness.
Children 10 and under can run for free. It is $7 for students with ID, $10 for individuals and $30 for a team of five.
