Southside’s Johnson has 17 touchdowns and five college offers, but he’s staying humble and quiet

Southside’s DeQuan Johnson scored six touchdowns during Friday night’s victory over B.B. Comer. The total was a career high for Johnson, the Panthers’ electric wide receiver, and gave him 17 touchdowns on the season.
After that kind of performance, many guys would show up to school Monday morning pointing to the paper and talking a big game. That couldn’t be farther from the truth for Johnson.
Head coach Daniel Flowers said the senior is quiet, doesn’t brag and is extremely humble.
“He ate lunch today by himself,” Flowers said. “He’s a regular guy. He doesn’t act like he scores touchdowns. He acts like everything is just normal.”
Johnson is letting his play do the talking and it’s paying off.
He’s received five scholarship offers this week. Virginia State University, Waldorf University, Walsh University, Point University and Cumberland University have all offered Johnson within the past few days.
“I just stay focused on everything that is ahead of me,” Johnson said.
This year he’s scored at least one touchdown in every game, including diving into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown against Selma.
Scoring touchdowns is nothing new to Johnson. Last year he scored 23 and made the Alabama Sports Writers class 4A all-state team.
What is new is playing on a team with a winning record. In his first three years playing for Southside, the Panthers went 8-22. This year Southside is sitting at 5-1 with a real chance to host a playoff game.
One of the biggest reasons for Southside’s turnaround is the play of Johnson, who has become a leader on and off the field.
“He handles it how a star athlete should handle it. He’s no Odell Beckham. He’s more of an Andre Johnson,” Flowers said, comparing his star to the Tennessee Titans wide receiver. “He scored touchdowns, broke records and went to the Pro Bowl every single year but you never heard from him.”
With the right breaks, maybe Johnson could one day play on that kind of stage. For now, he’s focused on helping Southside continue its best season in more than a decade.
Flowers is working behind the scenes to make sure more coaches get a chance to see Johnson play. He’s working with a company that sends video to colleges around the country and it’s benefited Johnson greatly.
The offers are coming in so fast that Johnson wasn’t even sure how many he had on Tuesday afternoon.
“I think some SEC schools are going to offer him soon,” Flowers said. “They want to see if he’s going to fall off and he’s not going to fall off.”
