The Muscular Dystrophy Association was the biggest winner of Saturday’s International Paper Riverdale Mill MDA Charity Golf Tournament at Valley Grande Golf Course.
All proceeds from the tournament went toward MDA, a health agency that is leading the fight against muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases. This year the tournament raised $8,189, according to Richard Hughey, one of the tournament’s organizers.
“We actually doubled what we did last year for the tournament, mainly because we got out in the community,” Hughey said. “Last year we got onto it late and we were kind of feeling our way through it. This year we got out into the community and into the city more.”
This was the second year that Hughey and Adam Crovato ran the tournament after taking it over in 2015. Hughey said local businesses helped out by making donations or providing door prizes.
The event’s biggest star was J.C. Higginbotham, a teenager who lives with MDA every day. Both J.C.’s grandfather, Phillip, and dad, Jason, work at International Paper. Hughey said J.C. had a tremendous day that started with the tournament and ended at Jordan-Hare Stadium for the Auburn-Arkansas game.
“A lot of the places we went [for donations] they knew J.C.,” Hughey said. “They knew and they about the MDA and they were willing to give money and prizes or anything they felt they could do. We were just very overwhelmed by it.”
A total of 92 players took part in the tournament.
Joe Crovato, Wayne Walker, Ray Hollingshead and Moses Ngiralab won first place; Tony Levins, Justin Levins, Randy Hughey and Richard Hughey got second place; and third place was Billy Kynard, Guy Wimberly, Derek Depuydt and Morgan Wedgewood.
